ABOUT THE E-LEARNING TOOL
| The United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT) and the End Human Trafficking Now campaign have developed an internet learning (eLearning) course which is a modular training program for business leaders, managers and employees of business companies. The course aims to help them understand what human trafficking is, identify where it might be a risk to their business and point to actions they can take to address this risk. The tool is technically developed and sponsored by Microsoft.
UN.GIFT and EHTN launched the tool during the Luxor International Forum, at a special breakfast for CEOs on 12 December 2010 . The tool itself was presented by Microsoft’s Regional Director of Citizenship and Community Affairs for the Middle East and Africa.
In addition to the eLearning course, a training handbook serves as a manual for educational purposes. The course aims to help enterprises understand what human trafficking is, identify how it might be a risk for their business and point to actions they can take to address this risk. |

Each module takes
approximately 20 minutes to complete
and includes a short quiz
which must be completed prior to
finishing the module. |
This eLearning tool is a work in progress. UN.GIFT and the EHTN campaign, with the support of private partners, will develop further modules addressed to specific economic sectors, industries and professions. These modules as well as those that are already available can be tailored to meet the specific needs of a company or business association.

WHY BUSINESSES SHOULD BE CONCERNED
The increasingly complex composition of corporate activity, with various supplier and subcontractor relationships, challenges the ability of companies to monitor their activities around the world. However, because human trafficking violates international human rights norms and laws, often defies international labor standards, and regularly involves corruption, businesses should ensure that all elements of their operations, including their products, premises and services are not contributing to human trafficking
Doing so enables companies to manage risk and ensure that their reputation and integrity remain intact. Further, companies should consider ways to help eliminate the existence of human trafficking through the promotion of codes of conduct and corporate social responsibility in an effort to enhance stakeholder relationships and improve business environments.
WHY AN E-LEARNING TOOL?
The aim is to provide a tool for businesses to acquire a basic knowledge of human trafficking and to assist in developing a successful corporate strategy to address it.
The primary purpose of the tool is to raise awareness among employees of this modern day slavery by:
- Providing a basic understanding of different facets of this phenomenon;
- Developing basic skills to identify the problem in one’s own workplace.
It informs businesses about the possibilities for tackling human trafficking at the local community level, working in close cooperation with relevant local stakeholders and particularly civil society, as well as at the national and international level in collaboration with national authorities and regional and international organizations.
The e-learning tool will be expanded, with new modules added to address specific economic sectors, industries and professions. These modules, as well as those that are already available, can be customized to meet the specific needs of a company or business association.
We are always looking at ways to improve our work and would very much appreciate any comments or suggestions that could help us to improve this tool. Please send your feedback to un.gift@unvienna.org and info@ehtn.org or fill in the feedback form on the front page on this website.
